    Agent-based Traffic Operator Training Environments for Evacuation Scenarios

    Realistic simulation environments play a vital role in the effective training of traffic controllers to respond to large-scale events such as natural disasters or terrorist threats. BAE SYSTEMS is developing a training environment that comprises of: a physical traffic control centre environment, a 3D visualisation and a traffic behaviour model. In this paper, we describe how an agent-based approach has been essential in the development of the traffic operator training environment, especially for constructing the required behavioural models. The simulator has been applied to an evacuation scenario, for which an agent-based model has been developed which models a variety of relevant driver evacuation behaviours. These unusual behaviours have been observed occurring in real-life evacuations but to date have not been incorporated in traffic simulators. In addition, our agent-based approach includes flexibility within the simulator to respond to the variety of decisions traffic controllers can make, as well as achieving a strong degree of control for the scenario manager

    Uncertainty in the business environment is a major threat for each and every organization. One such uncertainty is resource utilization. Proper resource utilization can be extremely beneficial to companies in any industry. One method of developing utilization strategies is the use of simulation modeling. Simulation models enable the user to visualize how altering different parts can change an entire system. It allows managers to test strategies and discover solutions to operational problems by mimicking the complex behavior of a system. Operations managers can test new ideas and options before actual implementation. Unfortunately, there has been little research concerning or using simulation models in the field of sport facility management. Like any other organization in a service-oriented business environment, a sport or recreation entity must also maximize resource utilization in order to maintain customer satisfaction and profitability. It is relatively unknown whether new or existing sport facilities consistently make use of simulation methods to develop their own utilization strategies. With the purpose of illustrating the benefits this software can provide, using the software Arena, a simulation model will be created to replicate the characteristics and activities of a fitness center

    In this comic, the student reflects on the process of doing research for Dean Scheibel\u27s Communication Studies course. Students were instructed to create comics using photographs, drawings, or a computer program called Comic Life 3. The idea of reflection is important in education. These comics could be viewed as a response to reflective learning (or metacognition) about the idea of the literature review, or “research as inquiry.” Through reflection on what we do, we learn more deeply about our everyday experiences of life, death, love, God, and even literature reviews. Although “comix” have been the objects of critique by academics, these comics subject the work of the academy—the faculty member as teacher—to critique. Research is a process, and by having students reflect on the fears, errors, or mistakes made during that process they will experience new insights and discoveries

    Two-dimensional aerodynamic characteristics of the OLS/TAAT airfoil

    Two flight tests have been conducted that obtained extension pressure data on a modified AH-1G rotor system. These two tests, the Operational Loads Survey (OLS) and the Tip Aerodynamics and Acoustics Test (TAAT) used the same rotor set. In the analysis of these data bases, accurate 2-D airfoil data is invaluable, for not only does it allow comparison studies between 2- and 3-D flow, but also provides accurate tables of the airfoil characteristics for use in comprehensive rotorcraft analysis codes. To provide this 2-D data base, a model of the OLS/TAAT airfoil was tested over a Reynolds number range from 3 x 10 to the 6th to 7 x 10 to the 7th and between Mach numbers of 0.34 to 0.88 in the NASA Langley Research Center's 6- by 28-Inch Transonic Tunnel. The 2-D airfoil data is presented as chordwise pressure coefficient plots, as well as lift, drag, and pitching moment coefficient plots and tables

    Design, simulation and experiment of a cusp electron beam for millimeter wave gyro-devices

    The design, simulation and experiment of a thermionic cusp electron gun that is to be used for millimeter wave generation will be presented. A cusp gun uses a non-adiabatic magnetic field reversal to obtain azimuthal motion on an electron beam resulting in an annular shaped, axis-encircling beam. The cusp gun was designed to generate a beam of 1.5A at 40kV with an adjustable velocity ratio of up to 3.0. The beam had a simulated axial velocity spread of 7.4% and alpha spread of 10.1%. The beam had an averaged radius of 0.35mm and beam thickness of 0.05mm which is ideal to drive sub-mm wave gyro-devices under investigation

    WEISS-SAT1: A Student Developed Astrobiology Payload for Small Satellite Microgravity Research

    The WeissSat-1 is a novel student developed 1U CubeSat designed to support astrobiology payloads for microgravity research. WeissSat-1 is the premier project of the Weiss CubeSat Development Team (WCDT), which was established in August of 2015. The founding WeissSat-1 team consisted of nine students ranging between the ages of 10-12 years old. The mission was: to design, build, test, and fly a CubeSat into space within three years. WeissSat-1, based on the NearSpace Launch Inc’s 1U FastBus structure, was chosen by ELaNa 24 and manifested to fly in the fourth quarter of 2018. WeissSat-1 will carry a lab-on-a-chip system designed to test and validate the survivability of extremophile bacteria in orbit. WeissSat-1 demonstrates the benefit and the importance of engaging and involving students in space-based scientific research throughout the academic pipeline. This work will discuss in detail the technology of the WeissSat-1 mission, and will discuss its impacts on middle school students and their STEM interests. The WCDT contends that if the respective extremophile bacteria on WeissSat-1 are capable of surviving in space, this may have ramifications for the possibility that bacteria may have transferred between planetary bodies over the life of the solar system
